Unlike previous festivals, this year’s Herbal Paste Festival introduced bold innovations by integrating TCM pastes with the influence of modern celebrities, successfully leveraging their extensive reach and fan base to attract a broader audience. Themed around traditional Chinese calligraphy, the event seamlessly combined this art form with modern fashion elements, creating a unique visual experience that showcases the richness and uniqueness of TCM culture, while also providing consumers with a meaningful and engaging experience.

In terms of product R&D, Lei Yunshang has pioneered a groundbreaking innovation with fruit-flavored herbal paste companions, addressing the challenges of traditional flavors and significantly enhancing consumer acceptance and experience. This innovation preserves the medicinal benefits of herbal pastes while catering to modern tastes, marking a major milestone in Lei Yunshang’s commitment to product innovation.

Herbal paste, a treasure within TCM culture, is renowned for its nourishing and body-tonifying benefits. The Jiangnan region has long been known for its prosperity since ancient times, with a strong emphasis on health among its people. One of the longstanding health traditions in Jiangnan is the use of herbal pastes, a practice that has remained popular for nearly two thousand years. In 1734, during the Qing dynasty, renowned physician Lei Dasheng—a leading figure in the Wu Medical School—established the Songfentang pharmacy at Changmen Gate in Suzhou, founding what is now known as Lei Yunshang. Over the past three centuries, Lei Yunshang has developed a range of acclaimed medicines, recognized for their exceptional formulations and remarkable efficacy. In recent years, it has been recognized as a “time-honored Chinese brand,” a “national intangible cultural heritage,” and a “well-known trademark” in China. Today, Lei Yunshang owns five historic Chinese brands, including Songfentang, Wanghongzhu, and Mutaishan, along with ten brands from Jiangsu Province, such as Tongbaochun, Lianglitang, Ningyuantang, Tianyisheng, and Panziyi.

In 2016, Lei Yunshang’s herbal paste production technology was recognized in the Representative Catalog of Jiangsu Provincial Intangible Cultural Heritage, having been carefully preserved over six generations. The representative inheritor of this tradition has also been honored as a Representative Inheritor of Jiangsu Provincial Intangible Cultural Heritage Programs. Lei Yunshang’s herbal pastes are distinguished by their unique qualities: a deep, ink-like black, a mirror-like gloss, and a texture that melts smoothly in the mouth. To ensure exceptional quality and efficacy, the herbs used in these pastes are sourced from over 100 self-operated herb bases, with active ingredient levels significantly above national standards and are fully traceable throughout the production process.

The successful Herbal Paste Festival not only embodies the inheritance and promotion of TCM culture but also represents an active exploration and innovation in modern communication channels. By integrating modern elements, Lei Yunshang has successfully revitalized ancient Chinese medicinal traditions, infusing them with renewed vitality and relevance in today’s society, and paving a new path for the future of TCM.
